Klankkleur Indonesië

This project is the result of research I conducted in October and November 2022, during which I traveled to Indonesia, specifically Java and Bali. Thanks to a grant I earned from the Stimuleringsfonds, I was able to do my research and build these sculptures. The project has been presented as a sound installation at The New Current during Art Rotterdam 2023, held in the former industrial expo space of Brutus. I crafted a collection of sculptures that also functioned as speakers within this sound installation. These sculptures played a musical composition created from field recordings captured during my journey. The outcome is an expansive and immersive sound experience.

I manipulated 1mm-thick steel plates to create gong-like forms by hammering them onto a wooden mold. This process not only shaped the steel but also strengthened it. As a result, the plates became more resonant when I played sounds on them using contact speakers. The installation included three sizable 3-meter-tall sculptures suspended from the ceiling, accompanied by four smaller curved sculptures that encircled them.

Research Indonesia

In October and November of 2022 I traveled to Java and Bali for a project that was funded by Stimuleringsfonds. What drew me to these islands was a fascination with gamelan music. I had a deep curiosity to delve into the music’s intricacies: its history, traditions, and its significance in modern-day Indonesia. My intent was to learn about the entire process, from crafting the instruments to witnessing a live performance or creating a recording. The project was sparked by a concert I attended in April 2022, featuring Dewa Alit, who invents his own gamelan instruments with unique tonal scales. During my journey, I had the privilege of meeting Dewa Alit on multiple occasions.

It was very special to meet some of these craftsmen, especially in the context of meeting a lot of artists and musicians. At the same time, I was learning more about the musical culture and history through literature and by talking with people about it. The knowledge gained from this research is something I’ll cherish forever.

Klankkleur (Sonance)

Amsterdam 2020 – 2021 (Gerrit Rietveld Academie Graduation Show)

The work is built out of three parts: the speaker, the sound, and the space.

The speaker is made as a sculpture but with the extra dimension of sound added. Therefore we
could call the speaker a sonic sculpture. The shapes found in the steel sculptures look like gongs
but with a futurist influence. This combines in an industrial-looking spiritual symbol. All
modifications to the material are made with consideration of the sonorous effect it has on the
sculpture.

The sound I made for these sculptures is derived from this relation between spirituality and
industry. My main inspiration for it is the archetype of a nightclub. The sounds remind me of
the sonic world one is in during a long night of clubbing, from waiting in line, to the center of the
club, to the ride home in the morning. Because this whole ritual was gone for over a year due to
the pandemic a new faithful appreciation has occurred to me.

The space is built in such a way that the sound is the most dominant sense one will use. The light
is used to amplify the sound, intending a transcended sensation. My inspiration for the visual
effect is a relationship between futurist painting and images from the nightclub landscape. This
can work out into feelings of ecstasy or fear.

Wasted Sound

Amsterdam 2019

A project I’ve done during my studies about waste seen from different perspectives. This project is special to me because it marks a point of finding my autonomous practice. My interest in waste came from me wasting a lot of time because I really couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do. This resulted in me searching for inspiration in different places. Which led me to combine my background in music with my architectural design study. It made me see the value of wasting time but mostly made me realize that the biggest lesson to be learned while studying is how to not study. How to work on your own.

I worked on the project in three different spaces. The theoretical space, the digital space and the physical space. For the theory, I made a publication with different perspectives on waste. In the digital space, I made a sound map with wasted sounds. In the real space, I made a sound installation in our department space with speaker sets bought at the thrift shop.
